EarthWorks Landscaping and Home Services

In the Green Valley Ranch subdivision, we recently had the pleasure of transforming a raw, dirt-covered backyard into a stunning and functional outdoor space designed with water conservation and low maintenance in mind. What was once an empty lot is now a thoughtfully planned landscape that balances hardscaping with strategic plantings, giving the homeowner a relaxing, accessible yard to enjoy for years to come.
Creating the Foundation: Patio & Walkways
Our first task was to establish a solid and stylish foundation. We poured a 250-square-foot concrete patio, providing a perfect area for outdoor seating, entertaining, or simply enjoying a quiet moment outside. To elevate the aesthetic, we used a Roman textured stamp, giving the patio a natural stone appearance that blends seamlessly with the surroundings.
Accessibility and ease of movement were key priorities for the homeowner. To achieve this, we installed a 3-foot-wide concrete walkway around the entire home, ensuring a smooth and slip-free surface for navigating the yard—especially important when compared to walking on loose rock or uneven terrain.
To improve the flow from the home to the patio, we removed a 4-foot section of the existing deck railing and built a new set of stairs leading directly to the new patio. This not only improved accessibility but also created a more inviting transition from indoor to outdoor living space.
Landscaping with Purpose: Flagstone and Plants
While much of the focus was on durable hardscaping, we didn’t neglect curb appeal. In the front yard, we laid a natural flagstone pathway to guide visitors to the entryway. This feature added charm while staying in line with the water-wise design.
In the backyard, we planted two Greenspire Linden trees along the fenceline. These trees are known for their symmetrical form and shade-producing canopy, which will help cool the space during hot summer months. On the side of the home, we installed two Dwarf Red Barberry shrubs—a vibrant, low-maintenance option that adds a splash of color and texture without requiring much water.
Finishing Touches: Concrete Staining for a Polished Look
After waiting the required 28 days for the concrete to fully cure, we returned to apply the finishing touches. Using Sherwin-Williams H&C concrete stain in Fall Grass, we stained both the walkway and patio, giving the entire hardscape a warm, earthy tone that complements the surrounding landscape and ties the space together beautifully.
This Green Valley Ranch project is a prime example of how a barren lot can be turned into a functional, water-wise landscape that’s as easy to maintain as it is enjoyable to use. Through smart design, durable materials, and intentional plant choices, we’ve created a backyard that enhances the homeowner’s lifestyle while honoring Colorado’s semi-arid climate.
