Transforming a Backyard in Elizabeth, CO: A Complete Landscape Installation

At EarthWorks Landscaping, we love turning an empty backyard into a private, functional, and beautiful outdoor living space. Our recent project in Elizabeth, Colorado, is a perfect example of what thoughtful landscape design and expert installation can achieve.
Starting with Privacy and Shade
The homeowners wanted a backyard that felt enclosed and relaxing, with space to entertain while maintaining a sense of seclusion. To establish a natural privacy screen, we installed ten Skyrocket Juniper trees—five along each side of the yard. These tall, narrow evergreens are ideal for Elizabeth’s climate and create a soft, green barrier from neighboring homes.
For overhead shade and a splash of seasonal color, we planted a 14-foot tall Autumn Blaze Maple near the rear property line. This fast-growing tree offers stunning fall foliage and will mature into a broad, shady canopy. We complemented it with a 12-inch tall Ponderosa Pine, a classic Colorado native that will grow into a bold, rustic anchor in the landscape.
Grading and Patio Preparation
Like many backyards in Elizabeth, this one had uneven terrain. Before we could begin hardscape installation, we needed to regrade and level the space. We brought in:
- 13 tons of structural fill dirt to raise and level the base
- 12 tons of recycled concrete base to create a solid, compacted foundation
- 15 yards of 4000 psi concrete
This groundwork was essential for supporting the major feature of the yard: a 600-square-foot concrete patio—perfect for dining, barbecuing, and relaxing with family and friends.
Sod, Rock, and Pathways
Once the patio was poured and cured, we softened the surrounding space with a 600-square-foot section of Colorado Bluegrass sod. This drought-tolerant grass offers a lush green finish and provides a natural play area for kids or pets.
To reduce maintenance and add contrast, we filled remaining areas with White Glacier river rock. This clean, modern decorative rock complements the surrounding plantings and reflects light beautifully.
To ensure easy access around the home, we also built concrete paver pathways down both sides of the house, tying the whole design together with form and function.
The Result: A Private, Usable Retreat
In just a few days, we transformed this yard into a private oasis. From privacy trees and shade to usable entertaining space and easy-care landscaping, the family now has a backyard that’s ready to enjoy for years to come.
